NACC FIGHTS CORRUPTION IN AREAS WHERE CITIZENS FACE PROBLEMS

The National Anti-Corruption Center (NACC) is focused on fight against corruption first and foremost in those areas where citizens face the greatest challenges and abuse, said Center Director Bogdan Zumbreanu.

According to the NACC press release, he stressed that in the first half of the year 20 people have been detained for involvement in fraudulent schemes in drug stores and pharmaceutical companies-suppliers; violations have been detected at Chisinau construction sites; a group of officials from the Public Services Agency have been taken into custody for illegal issuance of 6000 driver's licenses.

Bogdan Zumbreanu reminded that the Center has started investigation into the activity of a group of intermediaries and professors of Moldovan Academy of Economic Studies (ASEM) who took bribes from students.

In January-June, the NACC registered 477 corruption crimes, including 281 in Chisinau. The largest number of illegal acts was committed in the local public administration - 59, in the Ministry of Health - 39, and the Interior Ministry - 27.

The NACC hotline received 2,077 citizens' appeals, 141 are already investigating. The law enforcers seized defendants' property estimated at 54.5 million lei.
