GOVERNMENT SUGGESTS DECLARING A 9-DAY VACATION IN LATE AUGUST – EARLY SEPTEMBER

15 august, 2018

The Moldovan Government is proposing to announce a 9-day period at the end of August and beginning of September as days off, and has published a draft governmental Resolution to this end for a public discussion.

According to the draft, the Government suggests making August 28, 29 and 30 [Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday] as days-off that will be “compensated” for by Saturday labor on September 8 and 29 and on October 27. The country is thus receiving a 9-day-long vacation period – from August 25 till September 2 because August 27 and August 31 are official national holidays – the Independence Day and the Limba Noastra [Our Language] Holiday, and August 25 and 26 and September 1 and 2 are Saturdays and Sundays.

The Governing wrote in its explanatory note that the request to make a no-work period between the two national holidays – August 27 (Friday) and Limba Noastra of August 31 (Monday) – came to the Cabinet from trade unions.

Analysts believe however that by such an unexpected vacation the authorities are stimulating citizens’ massive escape for rest and recreation (say, to Romania and Bulgaria) starting from August 25 for the sake of upsetting the massive action of protest being prepared by the opposition National Resistance Movement to be held in Chisinau central square on August 26.
