MOLDOVAN AUTHORITIES FOCUS PUBLIC ATTENTION ON SOCIAL CONTROVERSIES, AND NOT ON REAL SITUATION – EXPERT KULMINSCHI

18 september, 2018

It is vitally important for the incumbent Moldovan authorities to focus the public attention on ethnic, national, geopolitical etc. differences, and not on the real situation in the republic, believes expert Vladislav Kulminschi of the Moldovan Institute of Strategic Initiatives (IPIS).

The expert wrote in his research that the people can be easily and quickly mobilized by raising questions of their ethnic belonging, or nationality or national culture.

“Such flame is easy to start but is impossible to control, and its consequences are irreversible: friends become enemies, a harmonic society develops into disunited social groups”, he wrote.

“The current situation in Moldova presents a sorrowful picture: the State is on the brink of bankruptcy; the country is a grey zone for laundering the dirty money coming from the East and the West; the society exists without laws or rules, where corruption has become a norm and where the political class acts in one’s individual selfish interests, keeping the systems of state institutions under control. In such conditions, the appearance of inter-ethnic questions on the political agenda will become a final stage of the republic’s degradation. However, such a situation suits the ruling regime, which receives a chance to preserve power against such a background”, believes the expert.

In his opinion, the society division job involves not solely the authorities but also some opposition leaders who, acting on behalf of the parties or the civil society, use ethnic differences for further segregation in the society and actually play in the authorities’ favor.

“Presently, the inter-ethnic relations in Moldova are rated exclusively through the prism of diametrically different outlooks. President Dodon and his Party of Socialists are conducting an irresponsible policy that may open the Pandora’s box in Moldova. They are promising the Russian-speaker population to restore the former status quo – instead of promoting the idea of studying the official language that would permit such citizens to get easier integrated into the society. A no less irresponsible line of conduct is being demonstrated by some opposition forces abiding by diametrically different outlooks. They simply divide the population into ‘friends’ and ‘foes’, or ‘we and them’”, said Vladislav Kulminschi.

“Unfortunately, we must recognize that integration of ethnic communities has suffered a fiasco in Moldova. Ethnic minorities have not received any assistance in studying the official language or the culture of the country’s majority. Besides this, throughout the independence period, the inter-ethnic relations in Moldova were based on an endless quest for a “historic truth”, and not on building of a joint future. The absence of a state policy in this field has generated risks threatening to the country’s social stability”, said the expert.

Vladislav Kulminschi believes that “a time has come to build a society aimed at development, a society solving its problems by joint effort, having a vision of an up-to-date efficient State. That is precisely the answer to the question of inter-ethnic relations in Moldova”.
