GUAM IS AN EMPTY VESSEL THAT DOES NOT HELP MOLDOVA DEVELOP – PUBLIC ACTIVISTS

Representatives of the public organization “Our Home is Moldova” (OHM) maintain that the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) [which is made of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova] is just an empty vessel, created by the US, which will never contribute to economic development of Moldova.

Representative of the organization Arteom Guriev said at the press conference that despite the fact that the GUAM exists for already over 20 years, it has not achieved any political or economic tasks it has set: creation of a sanitary corridor between Russia and the EU, raising of energy independence of participant countries from Russia, preparation of GUAM member countries for accessing the NATO.

“Despite the fact that GUAM member countries are united by the unstable relations with Russia, as well as the problem of territorial integrity, they have different approaches to conducting the external and internal policy and they will hardly ever come to a consensus”, the activist said.

According to the public activist Nelli Bartas, GUAM was more likely created by behind-the-scenes geopolitical players for destabilizing the situation inside the participant countries by means of such an instruments a “orange revolutions”, as well as for hindering the resolution of frozen conflicts.

“Despite the slogan “For Economic Development!”, none of GUAM countries achieved anything in this field. Moldova should seriously think over the formation of its foreign policy agenda and act for the sake of economic interests, but not for political ambitions”, she said.

Moldova, which is chairing the GUAM this year, is hosting on Friday a forum of prime ministers of the organization member countries.
