EU WILL BE FOLLOWING ELECTIONS IN MOLDOVA, FOR NOBODY KNOWS HOW NEW VOTING SYSTEM WILL WORK - MEP

16 november, 2018

The European Union will be closely watching the approaching parliamentary elections in Moldova because even the country's authorities seem to be not fully sure what the mixed election system, introduced by them, may lead to, Member of the European Parliament Petras Austrevicius of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) stated on the television.

In his words, the European Union has not perceived the authorities' arguments in support of such a cardinal re-shaping of the electoral system, and this was reflected in the European Parliament's Resolution, and conclusions in it were based not on political considerations but on the conclusions formulated by the Venice Commission.

"The European Union will attach attention not only to the election day, to the transparency of the voting and vote-count processes, but also to the preceding election campaign, to provision of equal conditions for all political players. The European Union regards Moldova to be a serious partner, and acts accordingly", said the Member of the European Parliament.

Speaking of the information that has already appeared on some pro-governmental television channels - that Moldova has allegedly achieved success in implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, the European parliamentarian said that it is not quite correct to pay attention to one page of a document and disregard other ones, and that "it is necessary to read the whole Resolution text".

Commenting on the one-billion-dollar bank fraud, Petras Austrevicius said that this was indeed a major embezzlement made by a handful of personalities, which will now have to be compensated for by all citizens of Moldova. So, the European Union is demanding clarity in the bank fraud investigation and in punishing of the responsible.
