NEW U.S. AMBASSADOR PAYS FAMILIARIZATION VISIT TO MOLDOVAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

The United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, Derek J. Hogan, undertook his first visit to the Moldovan Ministry of Defense, where he met Minister Eugen Sturza.

The interlocutors discussed bilateral cooperation and spoke out for enhancing the Moldova-U.S. dialog in the defense sphere.

Sturza briefed the American diplomat on latest achievements in Moldovan army modernization, in working out and approving of strategic-importance documents and in launching programs aimed at improving the living standards of the military and their families as well as of civilian freelance specialists.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the United States government for its permanent support to Moldovan army reform by providing possibilities for Moldovan army officers to study at U.S. educational institutions. To date, over 500 Moldovan MoD representatives have undergone various forms of such training.

Sturza spoke also of the technical assistance rendered by the USA to the Moldovan armed forces, having emphasized the 'special relationship' Moldova is developing with the National Guards of North Carolina and the field exercises organized by its Command.

The Moldovan Minister highly appreciated the United States' contribution to the re-equipment of the Bulboaca military training center (near Chisinau) done within the framework of the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) aimed at improving the training conditions of Moldovan soldiers and officers.

Ambassador Derek Hogan appreciated the progress achieved by the MoD leadership and said the U.S. Government will continue supporting the Moldovan armed forces modernization.

The interlocutors discussed the current situation in the region and possibilities for settling the Transnistrian conflict by using peaceful diplomatic means.
