INTERIOR MINISTER PROMISES TO PRESENT NEW RIOT-CONTROL VEHICLES TO PUBLIC

18 december, 2018

Minister of the Interior Alexander Jizdan said that soon the two riot-control vehicles "TOMA", brought to Moldova during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be presented to journalists and the society.

"So far, these vehicles are undergoing the procedure of customs clearance. After that, they will be transferred for police equipping, we will demonstrate to press and people in order not to have any misinterpretations", the Minister said.

He stressed that the special vehicles are necessary for ensuring public order and citizens' security. Police of Germany, the US, France, of other countries also has such vehicles.

According to him, had the Moldovan police had such vehicles on April 7, 2009 and had the officers be trained how to act, Chisinau would have not got two destroyed buildings and a plenty of injured.

"Today, everyone is saying that protesters were beaten in police offices. Yes, this happened, we regret this and it will never repeat. However, no one is talking about 300 police officers who were beaten during protests. Back then, police did all their best to prevent what happened with the available possibilities and technical equipping", Jizdan said.

He disagreed that on the Independence Day on August 27 police admitted violations against protesters in the city downtown.

"Police actions and the number of police officers corresponded to the situation. Back then we were informed that actions for destabilizing the situation in the country are being prepared", the minister said.

As Infotag has already reported, in the course of his official visit to Moldova on October 17-18, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a valuable gift to the Moldovan police - two armored vehicles for dispersing street manifestations. The vehicles are equipped with water cannons, water tanks, and tear-gas tanks.

The TOMA vehicles are assembled in Turkey specifically for disseminating massive protesting and the like purposes. The TOMA (Toplumsal Olaylara MГјdahale AracД±) is translated from Turkish as "instrument for interference during social incidents".

Besides Turkey, TOMA vehicles are used in Azerbaijan, Libya, Zimbabwe and some other countries.

The Moldovan opposition is sure that the authorities decided to equip the police with such vehicles, getting ready for possible protests before and after parliamentary elections set for February 24, 2019.
