MOLDOVAN TV CHANNELS DEMONSTRATED POLITICIZATION YET BEFORE ELECTION CAMPAIGN STARTED – REPORT

31 january, 2019

The Center of Independent Journalism (CIJ) and the Independent Press Association (IPA) presented the result of a monitoring of media outlets in the election period.

The monitoring was conducted within the period of January 9 through 24 among 12 TV channels: Moldova 1, GRT, Prime TV, Canal 2, Canal 3, Publika TV, Jurnal TV, NTV Moldova, Pro TV Chisinau, TV8, Accent TV, TV Centrala.

According to the report, a number of channels have demonstrated politicization even before the start of the election campaign.

In particular, the Prime TV, Canal 2, Canal 3 and Publica TV were predominantly covering the events connected with representatives of the Democratic Party. The activity of DP Chairman Vlad Plahotniuc and Deputy Chairman Pavel Filip was covered exclusively in positive and neutral context, while representatives of the ACUM election bloc – only in negative light. A radically different situation is at the Jurnal TV channel, which mostly supports the ACUM and criticizes the DP.

The NTV Moldova and Accent TV were focused on covering the activity of the Party of Socialists, which was presented in channels’ materials in positive or neutral context. A small share of air time was given to representatives of the DP, ACUM and the Shor Party, whose activity was mostly covered in a negative light.

TV Centrala offered most of its air time to the Shor Party and its Chairman, Orhei Mayor Ilan Shor. Representatives of PSRM and ACUM were mentioned in a negative context.

The rest of channels tried to be unbiased at covering the activity of electoral competitors.
