PARLIAMENT APPROVES DP INITIATIVE ON PROVIDING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO PENSIONERS FOR EASTER HOLIDAYS

08 february, 2019

The Parliament approved in a first reading a draft law on providing 600 lei (US$35) on the occasion of Easter holidays to pensioners and the disabled, whose monthly income is under 2 thousand lei.

DP deputy Valentina Rotaru said that it is about at least 600 thousand citizens, 491 thousand of whom are old-age pensioners. The payment of the lump-sum allowances will demand around 360 million lei (US$21 million).

Communist MP Oleg Reidman pointed that the Government did not give a conclusion on the bill, while the very document has no economic feasibility, which calls into question the fulfillment of provisions.

Parliament also approved in a first reading the Democrats' second social bill, according to which children will be monthly receiving material assistance from the state till the maturity.

Before, the DP leader Vlad Plahotniuc proposed that the allowance to be of 200 lei per month - less than US$12.

According to the statistical data, there are 675 thousand minors in Moldova.

Infotag's dossier: The incumbent Parliament had the right to approve these draft laws only in the first reading, because its mandate expired on November 2018. The initiatives may be adopted in the final reading after the new Parliament is formed. It is not excluded that in case the PSRM wins the elections, it is this party that will have to answer for populist social initiatives of the DP, seek funds for these and put them into practice.
