CIVIL SOCIETY REPRESENTATIVES CALL PSRM AND ACUM TO CREATE ANTI-OLIGARCHIC COALITION

05 april, 2019

The Civil Group called "Initiative in Support of Article 2 of the Constitution", uniting Moldovan political scientists Alexei Tulbure, Victor Ciobanu, Sergiu Tofilat, Valeriu Pasa, Stela Jantuan and Stefan Gligor, has urged MPs from the ACUM bloc and the Party of Socialists to consolidate their efforts and throw away ambitions for the sake of forming an anti-oligarchic coalition in the Parliament.

At a news conference held on Thursday, expert Sergiu Tofilat read out an Address saying that a majority of the Moldova citizens, who took part in the February 24 parliamentary election, cast their ballots against the incumbent regime in Moldova and for a change of power.

"Therefore, the parties, which have proclaimed struggle against the oligarchic forces, bear responsibility to their voters. However, 38 days after the elections, we have to state the absence of a political will, or a desire to achieve a compromise, or serious intentions to organize agreed-on actions in the future. That's why there is no parliamentary majority, and the Parliament is remaining non-functional", said Sergiu Tofilat.

In his words, each day increases the risk of parliament dissolution and of a snap election.

"But with an account of the fact that an early parliamentary election may be organized simultaneously with the ordinary local elections, such a combination is fraught with the strengthening of the Democratic Party's positions and with the Democrats' possible receiving a majority thanks to the Party's unlimited administrative resources and a powerful financial potential", said the expert.

Sergiu Tofilat stressed that Moldova needs to have a parliamentary majority able to ensure liberation of state institutions from control by the Democratic Party and its leader Vlad Plahotniuc, and able to bring the republic back onto a democratic development track.

"All this is possible to achieve only by joint voting for the package of the [ACUM] bills aimed at sparing the Moldovan judiciary system of the Democratic Party, at changing the Central Election Commission leadership, at abolishing the mixed election system, and by holding an early parliamentary election. The only possible way to ensuring the above-mentioned is to unite the efforts of the Party of Socialists and the ACUM bloc. That's why we are calling on deputies to consolidate their efforts to put the said package of bills into life and to organize a free and fair early parliamentary election on the basis of the proportional representation system", said Sergiu Tofilat.
