MIGRATION CAN BE POSITIVE FOR COUNTRY’S SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, TOO, EXPERT SAYS

21 may, 2019

The population’s labor migration has also a positive influence on Moldova’s socio-economic development, believes PhD in Economics Dorin Vaculovschi.

He said for the official website of the “Viitorul” [“Future”] Institute of Development and Social Initiatives (IDIS Viitorul), that last 20 years the monetary remittances sent home by Moldova citizens working in foreign countries [about US$1 billion a year] played an important stimulating role for the national economy.

“One should bear in mind that thanks to the labor migration, the country somehow solved its employment problem. The said citizens became labor migrants due to the lack of suitable jobs at home, and it is really hard to say if they would be able to find employment on the domestic labor market. Migration plays also an important role in the social plane thanks to the realization of specialized programs, e.g. Hometown, which presupposes the development of populated areas inter alia at the expense of citizens’ remittance from abroad”, said Dr. Vaculovschi.

The expert remarked, however, that the labor migration, becoming an increasingly massive phenomenon each coming year, is fraught with serious problems for Moldova.

“The present-day trend of population exodus, if preserved, will lead Moldova to a loss of about one-fifth of its population next few decades. This will further aggravate the country’s demographic problems – a decline in fertility, population ageing, an imbalance in the system of social services and other. But even though the remittances were seriously supporting the national economy for years, the nation’s long-term growth cannot be based on this source. Therefore, the authorities must assess the migration phenomenon objectively and reorient its positive effects to raising the population’s life quality”, said the expert.
