PREMIER CHICU SAYS TRANSPORTERS AND CENTRAL AUTHORITIES MUST ACHIEVE COMPROMISE

13 december, 2019

The Moldovan central authorities and the transport workers, who went on strike this week demanding to raise tariffs for passenger transportation, ought to reach a compromise, Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated to journalists following this morning’s operative meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Chicu stressed that in any negotiation process, unilateral concessions practically never happen, and compromises are normally reached only when both sides want to understand one another and make steps towards problem settlement.

“The Moldovan Government, like our entire society, is interested in the transport sector development. We are concerned about passengers’ security. But in a situation when the sector cannot ensure its own financing, it is extremely hard to achieve the goal”, said the Prime Minister.

Ion Chicu announced that at 3 pm on Friday, governmental representatives will continue negotiations with transporters.

He remarked that the transport workers had decided to begin their communication with the authorities from a strike, “which is not the most efficient method of resolving the problem”.

“The Government’s main conditions are to ensure traffic and passenger transportation safety and to observe the tax legislation. Far from all transportation companies fulfill these conditions. And the transporters’ main demand is that the Government must permit them to raise the passenger transportation tariff [up to 0.72 lei per a kilometer from the current 0.48 lei], which was set yet in 2012 and has not been changed since then, though the aggregate rate of inflation has exceeded 27% over this period”, said Ion Chicu.
