MOLDOVA MAY REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS BY 88% IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS

29 january, 2020

With necessary financial, technical and technologic support, Moldova may reduce the greenhouse gas emissions even by 88% against the planned 70% (in comparison to 1990). This is provided in an updated document INDC [Intended Nationally Determined Contributions] on the Moldova’s contribution to reduction of emissions.

According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Moldova, the updated document, presented on Tuesday within the joint working meeting with government authorities and other interested institutions, is more optimistic than the previous (2015), which implied that the republic is able to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions 64-67%, while with international support – 78%.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Dorin Andros said at the sitting that though Moldova’s share accounts for only 0.026% of the world volume of greenhouse gas emissions, the country suffers from the global warming along with other countries.

“Agriculture, water resources, forestry, healthcare, energy sector and transport are most vulnerable to the climate change, thus we will be working with the international community both for mitigating the consequences and for adapting to climate change”, he said.

Since 1990 through 2016 the greenhouse gas emissions in Moldova fell to 14.6 million tons from 44.6 million tons of the CO2 equivalent, or 68%. However, after 2000, the volumes started to grow by on average 3.4% per year, while over the last decade the tempos of emission growth fell to 0.12% per year.

The INDC document was updated and prepared with the support of the EU4Climate project, financed by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP.
