GENERAL PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE CLAIMS THAT DECISION ON CASE OF VASILY BOTNARI IS COMPLETELY CLASSIFIED BY JUDGE OF BUIUCANI COURT

10 september, 2020

The General Prosecutor's Office stated that the criminal case and the submitted decision against the former director of the Information and Security Service Vasile Botnari were completely classified by the judge of the Buiucani court. This is said in the statement of the General Prosecutor's Office in response to the statements of a number of social activists and political groups, who expressed their indignation at the too lenient sentence against Botnari.

The report notes that the prosecutor in Botnari case, due to its great public resonance, based on the law No. 17 "On State Secrets", requested for its declassification.

With regard to the prosecutor who was in charge of this case, the GPO decided to conduct an internal investigation, during which all the circumstances of this case will be objectively established.

As was already reported, Vasile Botnari has fully admitted his guilt on the case of the illegal expulsion of seven teachers of the Orizont lyceum network from Moldova in September 2018. Under these conditions, charges were dropped against other defendants on this case. In July, Botnari was sentenced to two years of suspended imprisonment and a fine of 80 thousand lei. He also compensated the state with 125 thousand lei, which Moldova paid by the decision of the European Court for Human Rights to the families of the victims, as well as 380 thousand lei for the ordered plane to send Turkish citizens home.
