EX-VICE-PREMIER: GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO BE CAREFUL WITH ATTRACTING FOREIGN LABOR

25 september, 2020

The government has to be careful with attracting foreign labor, - says former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Alexander Muravschii.

He said in an interview with Infotag that the reasons why the government is taking such a step are not clear to him.

"On the one hand, we have unemployment, on the other hand, some people leave Moldova, forming vacancies, including in the area that does not require high qualifications," he said.

According to him, a significant part of cleaners, dishwashers, garbage collectors in Europe is compensated by migrants, as local residents do not want to do this work, preferring unemployment benefits.

"Moldova is starting to follow this path, but not because we are a developed country, but because the population is leaving, and the rest do not apply for vacancies with earnings of 2-4 thousand lei," Muravschii said.

He believes that the Government was talking about attracting unskilled labor.

"If the migrants come, they come from the Asian or African region, because they will not come to low-paid positions from Romania and Turkey. This labor force will do the menial work, restraining wage growth in other industries," he said.
