GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN PRESENTS EQUIPMENT AND MEDICINES TO MOLDOVAN ONCOLOGY INSTITUTE

23 september, 2022

With the mediation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Government of Japan passed to the Moldovan Oncology Institute a second consignment of up-to-date medical equipment and medicines worth $230 thousand.

Ion Prisacaru of the Ministry of Health said that this donation is part of the humanitarian relief project in Ukraine and neighboring countries implemented by the Japanese Government and international partners.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Moldova Yoshihiro Katayama called as “tragedy” the developments taking place in neighboring Ukraine, which was subjected to “unreasonable aggression from Russia”.

“Since February 24, the people and authorities of Moldova have been close to their Ukrainian neighbors, accepting thousands of refugees in their country: women, children and the elderly. This causes respect and admiration. In this regard, a decision was made by the Government of Japan to provide every possible help to the states involved in minimizing the humanitarian catastrophe. In total, about $1 billion has already been allocated for these purposes. The means are transferred mainly to international organizations, such as the IOM, which are directly involved in projects of assistance to Ukraine and its neighbor countries. After studying the situation in the Ministry of Health, the Japanese authorities will allocate another $8 million for the qualitative improvement of equipment in medical institutions,” the diplomat said.

According to him, in order to analyze the situation in various spheres of the republic's life, three groups of experts in various fields have already visited it (from March to May), who will provide information to the Japanese authorities on how and where Moldova can be helped, including in the context of the reception of Ukrainian refugees.

The Ambassador expressed hope that the provided equipment and medicines would be used by Moldovan doctors “with a maximum benefit for patients”.
