Announcement of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Moldova

Within the scope of the international development cooperation of the Czech Republic and Republic of Moldova the Association LEOVA WASTE MANAGEMENT (consisting of the three companies ETC Consulting Group s.r.o., VHS Brno, a.s. and Ircon, s.r.o.) has realized Project in the field of waste management: “Realization of waste management concept with the objective of reducing negative impact on water quality in the region Leova” in the town of Leova. A ceremonial completion of the project and official presentation of its result has taken place at Leova Municipality on Thursday the 5th November 2009 in the presence of Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Moldova Mr. Gheorghe Salaru, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Republic Moldova Mr. Petr Kypr, Mayor and members of the Leova Council, Director of the Czech Development Agency, representatives of other municipalities from the region, foreign embassies and donors.

The aim of the project of value 470.000,- Euro, which was realised during the last three years, was to cover the waste management in its complexity, starting with education of the children and adults in sorting out the communal waste, developing the ecological waste-storing place, which will not allow contaminating the underground waters, and developing waste water cleaning plant, to close the cycle. The realization team of this pilot projects wished to come up with a model solution. The Project assisted to the Leova municipality to draft the methodology for waste management, to develop the concept how to deal with municipal waste and how the waste management program should look like. All these documents can be applied and used in other regions of the Moldova as well.

One of the important aim of the Project was supporting separation and collection of municipal waste and certain types of hazardous waste in the city. Accordingly, children at schools and adults are actively involved in waste separation through public awareness campaigns.

To summarize the Czech Republic’s development activities in the Leova region it is worth to mention that this project is fully in line with the development strategy of the Czech Republic agreed with Republic of Moldova, focused on minimization of water pollution, provision of safe drinking water and sanitation in central and south regions of Moldova. In the period since 2006, local water works was reconstructed, new waste water treatment plant was provided, and above mentioned project focused on solid waste management was implemented in Leova. In the region of Leova, old ecological burden in Iargara was rectified, and regional scheme of water supply developed.

Finally, all these projects contributed to the transfer of know-how in the environmental sector and created new fundaments for much wider cooperation between both countries in the near future.
