TRANSNISTRIA LEADER EVGHENY SHEVCHUK CONGRATULATES RUSSIA WITH ITS DAY OF PEACEMAKER TROOPS

29 july, 2014

The Transnistria president Evgheny Shevchuk congratulated servicemen of Russia’s peacekeeping forces, who serve in the security zone on the Nistru River.

Quoting the PMR president’s website, Shevchuk draws attention to the fact that “for 22 years Russian peacekeepers have ensured peace on the Nistru banks, and Transnistrians are aware of the role of peacekeeping operations in Russia, and its special historical mission”.

“In light of changing foreign policy outlines, the peacekeeping operation today, as never before, needs to be preserved and strengthened”, said Shevchuk.

He noted, that “Russian peacekeepers are guarantors of the peaceful existence of the Transnistria citizens”.

Infotag’s dossier: The peacekeeping operation in Transnistria is held in accordance with the Moldo-Russian Agreement on principles of peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict on July 21, 1992. At present, the peacekeeping forces are situated in the security zones of the Nistru banks. They are composed of military contingents of Russia, Moldova and Transnistria, as well as a group of military observers from Ukraine consisting of 10 officers.

The Moldovan authorities have repeatedly called for the transformation of the peacekeeping operation in the mission of civilian observers under OSCE auspices. Russia and Transnistria are against it, and Ukraine treated with restraint.

In the beginning of last week the press wrote that the Ukrainian authorities intended to denounce the agreement with Russia providing the conditions for stay of Russian peacekeepers in Transnistria, and thus achieve their withdrawal from the conflict zone. In response, Ukraine assured that it “will further maintain the Transnistrian settlement in the 5+2 format”.
