TIRASPOL LEADER PROPOSES CONDUCTING LOCAL AND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS TOGETHER

29 september, 2014

President of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan republic (PMR) Evgheny Shevchuk proposed to introduce in Transnistria the unique day of voting, as in Russia.

On Friday, on the local TV channel, he proposed, as a first step, to conduct in the same day the parliamentary and the local elections, which are planned for 2015.

“It is likely that in Transnistria to be only two election campaigns: to elect the representative authority bodies that is deputies to the village council, raion council and superior council – in one day, and, a year later to elect the President”.

He also regards as rational to transfer deputies to a permanent system of work and reduce their number from 43 to 31.

Asking the TV viewers’ question about if there will be an airport in Tiraspol, the Transnistrian leader said that he completely supports this idea.

“We have a good airstrip and the position of former military airfield. Within the ministry of foreign affairs’ negotiations and different international contracts, we are seeking to have all the necessary documents to open this airport. We even have investors, ready to help us refit it in a civil airport”, said he, however confessing that “Moldova hinders the airport opening, while the European Commission International Organization will not allow flights from Tiraspol due to the unrecognized status of Transnistria”.

According to Shevchuk, “PMR is interested to create regular flights at least between Kiev and Tiraspol, between Moscow and Tiraspol”.

He announced about the reform, conducted by the Ministry of Defense, within which a subdivision of the airborne troops was created. Recently, it successfully demonstrated its military training during the anti-terrorism exercises, monitored personally by Shevchuk.

As Infotag has already reported, the superior council did not approve Shevchuk’s initiative on amending election code and reducing number of deputies, but he does not lose hope that these will be adopted and is constantly promoting them in media.
