TRANSNISTRIA IS SPECIAL REGION WITHIN INTEGRAL MOLDOVA – GRIGORY KARASIN

26 january, 2015

Transnistria must be a special region with special guarantees for its legal status within a territorially integral Moldovan state, believes Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs/State Secretary Grigory Karasin.

The deputy Minister stated this in the Russian State Duma [parliament] last Friday, stressing that Moscow follows closely the development of relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol.

Karasin expressed hope the 5+2 format negotiation process will soon be resumed. He said there was a break in the activities of the negotiation participants, but now a perspective is emerging for a further advancement to reaching mutual trust between Transnistria and Moldova.

In his words, much will depend on what Government Moldova is going to receive.

“Negotiations there are continuing, but no governing coalition has been formed yet. We are following all this attentively. All questions of relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol are in our field of vision”, stated the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.

Karasin stressed, “The Transnistrian Moldovan Republic remains our partner. We have signed with Tiraspol a whole number of inter-ministerial agreements, in whose frameworks we are rendering practical assistance to many spheres of life in Transnistria. But what concerns our official position on the Transnistria settlement process, in which we take an active part in the format of 5+2 and other formats, we believe that Transnistria, being our partner, should be a special region with special guarantees of its legal status within a territorially integral Moldovan state”.
