MOLDOVA AND TRANSNISTRIA FAILED TO USE DEVELOPMENT POSSIBILITIES – ROMANIAN RESEARCHERS

25 september, 2015

Neither Moldova nor Transnistria have used their development possibilities to a full extent, believe Eugen Strautiu and Vasile Tabara, researchers from Lucian Blaga Romanian University in Sibiu city.

They stated at the presentation of their “Comparative analysis of development on both Dniester banks” held in International Independent University of Moldova (ULIM) on Thursday that “Moldova develops poorly on both sides of the Dniester River”.

The researchers arrived at a conclusion that such poor progress has been due to the fact that politically partial administrative structures do not fulfill their duties before the society, the administrative corruption is flourishing, the personnel selection system is subjective, and in the conditions of international pressure the authorities on both Dniester sides protect local interests insufficiently firmly.

In the course of the researches, the authors considered five development criteria: politics, economy, civil society, the mass media, and human rights, and organized discussions with Chisinau and Tiraspol representatives and an international seminar in Sibiu for experts from both Dniester sides, said Dr. Vasile Tabara, Professor of the University’s chair of international relations, political sciences and security researches.

The experts said that one of the reasons of such low economic indicators has been the model of economic growth targeted exceptionally on domestic demand.

In their opinion, to achieve a better economic welfare of commodity producers and the populations on both river rides, it would be useful if Chisinau and Tiraspol take joint measures to combat shadow and criminal schemes in business running; to establish contacts and cooperation in the taxation field; to use a correct modeling of benefits in the industrial cooperation sphere; to develop ties between banking systems by coordinating regulatory principles.

The research authors regard as worthwhile and deserving a close attention the Chisinau’s initiative to create a common economic area.

The research concerned is the chief product of the project named “Development for solving the Transnistrian conflict” carried out by the Laboratory for the analysis of the Transnistrian conflict working under the Sibiu University. The project was financed by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its budget was 90 thousand Romanian lei (US$22.7 thousand).
