ALEXANDER TARNAVSKII ELECTED SPEAKER OF GAGAUZIA LEGISLATURE

23 january, 2017

On Friday afternoon, the Gagauzia Popular Assembly elected Alexander Tarnavskii as Speaker of the regional parliament. He was supported by 28 deputies out of the 31 who took part in the voting. Three deputies voted against, and two left the room yet before the voting had started.

The Tarnavskii candidacy tried to be challenged by some GPA deputies, in particular by Sergiu Cimpoies, who called on colleagues to respect the law and requirements to be met with GPA Speaker.

“As you certainly know, Article 53 in the Gagauzia Ulojeniye [region’s constitution] says that the Speaker must have a good command of the Gagauz language. As far as I know, Mr. Tarnavskii does not speak the language. This is impermissible”, stated Cimpoies. But most of the deputies disagreed with his opinion. Seeing that, Cimpoies left the session room, and promised to challenge the forum’s decision with the Court.

Alexander Tarnavskii stated that his chief work priority will be economy, and that politics will not be dominating in the legislative forum any longer, for “We must focus on Gagauzia’s economic development”.

The GPA constituent meeting was attended by Bashkan [Governor] of Gagauzia Irina Vlah.

Tarnavskii was elected to the forum from an electoral district in Comrat [the administrative center of the southern Moldovan autonomous region of Gagauzia]. Last 4 years, he was GPA Deputy Speaker and was a member of the Democratic Party faction. He is also known for his proximity to Moldovan parliamentarian Nikolai Dudoglo, a Democrat.
