TRANSNISTRIA WILL NEVER HAVE INDEPENDENCE - PRESIDENT DODON

25 may, 2017

"Transnistria will not be independent. Never. And it will never be a Russian Federation subject", Moldovan President Igor Dodon stated on the local television on Wednesday night.

Dodon reminded that one of his main objectives as a head of state is reunification of the Republic of Moldova.

"I have always said and I am repeating now: Moldova has no future without Transnistria. And Transnistria has no independent future. When somebody from the left Dniester River bank tells me, "We have never been together with Moldova [i.e. as a part of the independent Republic of Moldova]", I reply: "You used to be a part of Ukraine [Moldovan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, MASSR, within the Ukrainian SSR in 1924-1940]. Do you want to go back to Ukraine?" Transnistrians need to decide something. They will never get independence", reiterated the Moldovan President.

In his opinion, reunification of the Republic of Moldova is possible in the framework of a federative state or by working out another formula that has to be worked out at a negotiating table.

"However, reunification of our country is disadvantageous to certain forces" believes Igor Dodon.

"I highly respect Transnistrian president Vadim Krasnoselsky. He is an experienced politician but is a hostage to the existing political system. Look, Transnistria has never paid for Russian natural gas, so the region's gas debt has by now reached US$7 billion. According to our calculations, another US$15 billion were received by Tiraspol over last two decades as direct investments in the Transnistrian economy. Well, where is the money? And why the Transnistrian produce is non-competitive internationally if the gas tariff in the region is so low? There are forces to whom approximation of Moldova and Transnistria is disadvantageous, and these forces don't care about the interests or vital needs of the Transnistrian population", said Igor Dodon, adding that "with the above-mentioned investments and with a compact population of 300 thousand, it was long possible to make a second Dubai of the Transnistrian region".

Dodon is convinced that an absolute majority of Transnistrians want to get legalized: "They want to study at foreign universities, and want to export their products to foreign markets. And the situation is approaching a solution. But I presume that in such conditions certain forces may well resort to provocations. I hope Vadim Krasnoselsky will not yield to the forces that earn fortunes on the Russian gas".
