MOLDOVAN PRESIDENT'S PROPOSALS ARE UNACCEPTABLE FOR TRANSNISTRIA - TIRASPOL LEADER

22 june, 2017

Transnistrian president Vadim Krasnoselsky has called as unacceptable the Moldovan President Igor Dodon's proposal to reserve in the Moldovan Parliament a certain quota of seats for deputies from Transnistria.

In his interview with Russia's influential Nezavissimaya Gazeta [Independent Newspaper] Krasnoselsky said that according to the Transnistrian legislation that is analogous to the Russian legislation, the citizens of Transnistria may not take part in elections in foreign countries, "including indeed in Moldova".

"Transnistria has its own laws, own electoral system, own central election commission and constitution. Our constitution does not permit Transnistrians to take part in elections in foreign countries. But even if some Transnistrians decide to vote in Moldovan elections, this will be regarded only as a private initiative", stated Krasnoselsky.

As already reported by Infotag, earlier this week President Igor Dodon named 4 conditions, without which the changing of electoral system in Moldova will be impossible. One of the indispensable conditions is that a certain number of seats in the Moldovan Parliament must be necessarily reserved for deputies from Transnistria - for real representatives of the region.

"If all these conditions remain in the bill text, we will vote for it in parliament in a second reading. If our colleagues in the Parliament refuse to include into the law even one of the four conditions, we shall not vote for such document", wrote President Igor Dodon.

He also stated that he requested the Moldovan Government to resolve the problem of motor vehicles having Transnistrian license plates i.e. to equip such vehicles with special plates that would permit them to travel to foreign countries. That proposal was also criticized by Vadim Krasnoselsky. He called Russia to give its juridical assessment of the Ukraine's and Moldova's plans to prohibit Transnistrian motor vehicles to enter the Ukrainian and Moldovan territories. In his recent interview with all-Russia Izvestia newspaper, the Tiraspol leader reminded that the Transnistrian license plates are recognized by the Moldovan side according to the agreement signed yet in 2001 between then-presidents Vladimir Voronin and Igor Smirnov. "The Moldovan and Transnistrian sides have undertaken to reciprocally recognize the license plates. There is a conclusion issued by the EUBAM [the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine, working here for more than 10 years now], in which Transnistrian plates are recognized as international ones. Transnistria is home to 220 thousand citizens of Russia, and they must be protected by the Russian law. I call Russia to give its legal assessment of the issue", said Transnistrian president Vadim Krasnoselsky.
