MOLDOVAN AUTHORITIES OBJECT TO ROGOZIN’S USING MILITARY AIRPLANE

20 july, 2017

Moldova has denied permission to the Russian President’s Special Representative on Transnistria, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to come to Chisinau and Tiraspol on board a Russian Air Force plane, Moldova's Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur wrote in his letter to the Russian Embassy in Chisinau.

The scanned text of the letter with the minister’s signature was published on the deschide.md website. The letter did not mention the name of Mr. Rogozin, though it is clear that this very Rogozin would like to bring a Moscow delegation and Russian artists here. No wonder: Rogozin is the Russian Federation’s Co-Chairman of the Moldova-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation.

On Wednesday, Moldovan President Igor Dodon held a meeting with the Russian Federation’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, Farit Muhametshin, and discussed with him the visit Dmitry Rogozin was going to pay here at the end of July. After that talk, and also on Wednesday, Farit Muhametshin met with Andrei Galbur.

The Moldovan foreign ministerial press service wrote in this connection that the interlocutors exchanged opinions about the approaching 25th anniversary of the peacekeeper operation on the Dniester and about the order of marking this event. In particular, it was said that the Moldovan authorities believe this event should be marked on the basis of a mutual plan of events because a unilateral celebration program cannot promote consolidation of trust between the river sides. In that context, the interlocutors touched on questions related to promotion of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.

The ministerial press release did not mention the letter sent to the Russian Embassy, but it is apparent that it was handed in to Ambassador Farit Muhametshin during the Wednesday’s meeting.

The letter said: “Moldovan competent organs have to deny permission for the using of the Moldovan airspace and for landing of a Russian Air Force plane in the airports of Chisinau and Tiraspol due to the absence of necessary conditions for this, which the Russian side was repeatedly informed about”.

The Moldovan foreign ministry also regards as inexpedient to hold the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the joint peacekeeper operation in the Transnistria Security Zone.

“In this context, expressing their regret about the absence of an agreed-on plan of joint undertakings timed to the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement on the Principles of a Peaceful Settlement of the Armed Conflict in the Transnistrian region of Moldova [of July 21, 1992] and of the start of the peacekeeper operation on the Dniester, the Moldovan authorities believe it is inexpedient to hold such a celebration in a unilateral order”, said the ministry’s letter.
