BASHKAN CONGRATULATES GAGAUZ PEOPLE ON 4TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL REFERENDUMS

02 february, 2018

Gagauzia Bashkan [governor] Irina Vlah congratulated the region’s population on the anniversary of referendums, conducted on February 2, 2014.

She wrote in social networks that this day demonstrated that the autonomy is inhabited not by simple people, but by a unique and solidary Gagauz people.

According to her, due to referendums, people far beyond the Moldovan borders – in Moscow, Ankara, Brussels – found out about Gagauzia.

“These events will become a reference point of a completely new attitude of external partners to the autonomy. I hope that once we will be heard in Chisinau as well”, Vlah said.

She thanked public activists and Gagauzia Election Commission members, who were not afraid to legally register and flawlessly conduct the voting on the entire Gagauzia territory, as well as those who financed the plebiscites.

Bashkan supposed that the day of February 2, 2014 is only a beginning of a new page in the history of a strong and self-confident Gagauzia.

Infotag’s dossier: On February 2, 2014, two local referendums were conducted in Gagauzia – a legislative one and a consultative one. Within one of plebiscites, over 98% of region’s citizens stood for autonomy’s integration in the Eurasian Economic Union [which was made of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan at that moment]. Within the other plebiscite 96% electors voted for Gagauzia’s right to self-determination in case Moldova loses its independence. Moldovan authorities did not recognize the results of referendums.
