TRANSNISTRIANS TOOK ACTIVE PART IN RUSSIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

20 march, 2018

73,947 residents of Transnistria having the Russian citizenship took part in the Russian presidential election last Sunday, and 96.4% of them cast their ballots for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Transnistrian central election commission chairperson Yelena Gorodetskaya stated to the press on Monday.

She underlined that it was the highest voter turnout figure showed by Transnistria residents in all Russian electoral processes here. The 2012 Russian presidential election, for instance, was attended by 50,368 voters, and the 2016 Russian parliamentary election - by 55,693 Transnistrians.

The voting and vote-count processes were observed by 87 observers delegated by the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation. No complaints or information about whatever violations have been sent by anybody to the Transnistrian election commission, or to local commissions, or to the Russian Embassy in Chisinau.

With a population of 475 thousand people [according to the 2015 census], Transnistria is home to approximately 220 thousand citizens of Russia, of whom nearly 200 thousand are eligible to vote. At the previous Russian presidential election in 2012, the number of Transnistrians having the Russian citizenship was standing at 160 thousand people, with 140 thousand having the right to vote.
