TIRASPOL CALLS UNITED NATIONS TO HELP RESOLVE PROBLEMS WITH TRANSNISTRIANS' RESTRICTED RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS

04 june, 2018

The Transnistrian Moldovan Republic [PMR] is counting on the United Nations' active participation in the work aimed at resolving problems in the sphere of observing the rights and freedoms of PMR citizens that appear due to the negative external influence from behalf of neighbor countries, Transnistrian minister of foreign affairs Vitaly Ignatiev stated during his meeting with United Nations expert on human rights Thomas Hammarberg.

In the minister's words, "In a situation when many important questions are deliberately 'infected' with political aspects, the mobilization of international players, including from the United Nations, can bring significant practical results and help substantially in moving forward".

"In the person of Mr. Hammarberg, I thanked the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Antonio Guterres for including the Transnistrian conflict settlement into the list of UN's 12 priorities. We also requested to render us assistance by means of assigning a special rapporteur or a monitoring group that could help us in resolving very many humanitarian problems caused by the restriction of the Transnistrians' rights and freedoms. I am counting very much on the United Nations' understanding and support", said the Transnistrian foreign minister.

Thomas Hammarberg promised to convey the Tiraspol's request to the UN Secretary General.

Speaking of the results of his two-day visit to Transnistria, Thomas Hammarberg said he had come specially to see what changes in the human-right field have taken place in Transnistria since his previous visit in 2012.

In his words, very much has been done in the sphere of ensuring the protection of people with limited possibilities, and a progress can be seen in struggle against family violence.

Thomas Hammarberg was received by Transnistria president Vadim Krasnoselsky who stressed that the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic is a modern democratic state, in which the main value are the people, and the first-priority objective is to observe their rights. Krasnoselsky said 2018 has been declared in Transnistria as a Year of Equal Possibilities.

"We have worked out a rich and multifaceted program of events and measures in support of citizens whose life has been complicated with health circumstances. The aim of the program is to create conditions for a successful socialization of invalids and to demonstrate in deeds their full equality of rights in the society", said Vadim Krasnoselsky.

Among the recommendations formulated by the United Nations expert on the results of his new visit to Transnistria are the elaboration of a state program of human-right protection, a maximum-possible raising of the population's awareness, the inclusion of this question into education programs of schools and higher-level educational institutions training specialists to work in spheres that presuppose a close interaction with the population.
