PRESIDENT DODON OPTIMISTIC ABOUT CHANCES FOR TRANSNISTRIAN CONFLICT SETTLEMENT AFTER ELECTIONS

Moldovan President Igor Dodon believes that there are realistic possibilities for making important steps towards Transnistrian conflict settlement after the soon-to-be parliamentary elections, he stated on Wednesday during his meeting with Ambassador Michael Scanlan, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, who is accomplishing his 5-years mandate in Chisinau.

Dodon wrote on his Facebook page afterwards that he had expressed gratitude for Mr. Scanlan’s contribution to the conflict settlement process on the bilateral level and within the 5+2 negotiating format.

The President highly assessed the efforts for approximation of the Sides’ positions to work out compromise-like solutions on questions essential for the residents of both Dniester River sides. Dodon wrote he is going to further stand for launching negotiations on working out and approving a special legal status for Transnistria with the observance of the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The President thanked Ambassador Michael Scanlan for his assistance in promoting the development of the Gagauzia autonomy in southern Moldova in conformity with the 1994 Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia.

“I expressed hope that after the forthcoming parliamentary elections, all the laws pertaining to Gagauzia will start to be adopted in the versions to be proposed by the joint working group of the Moldovan Parliament, the Gagauzia Popular Assembly civil society representatives. I welcomed the productive cooperation organized by our country with the OSCE Secretariat and OSCE specialized structures”, wrote President Dodon.

As a sign of high recognition of the merits and contribution to the political dialog invigoration and to the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, the President of Moldova has signed a Decree on decorating Ambassador Michael Scanlan with the Ordinul de Onoare [Order of Honor].
