PRESIDENT DODON AND FORMER TRANSNISTRIAN LEADER SMIRNOV MAY FALL UNDER AMERICAN SANCTIONS

20 november, 2018

The Free Russia Forum (FSR), uniting politicians strongly oppositional to the incumbent Russian government, has proposed Washington to apply new individual sanctions against the persons on the so-called "Putin List", including against Moldovan President Igor Dodon and Transnistria's first president Igor Smirnov.

According to the FSR, the project is called to become "a really nation-wide undertaking that should permit to determine the persons responsible for the current state of things in Russia". The List is "the first step in creating an evidentiary record of crimes committed by the persons in question".

The Putin List consists of 12 categories of people, including "Leaders" - high-ranked political figures responsible for the planning, elaboration, carrying out, financing, and informative backing of aggressive, criminal, corrupt operations in the Russian Federation".

Igor Dodon has been included into the denomination "Foreign Agents", where he has found himself in a company with former Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi, ex-Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schroeder, President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman, former Acting President of the Republic of Georgia Nino Burjanadze, PACE ex-Chairman Pedro Agramunt, French politician Marine le Pen, and even former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Former Tiraspol leader Igor Smirnov has been included into the category of "Puppets and Criminals of War", that unites "the leaders and CEOs of state and quasi-state formations outside the Russian Federation, occupied, supported and funded by the Putin regime, who are responsible for committing crimes outside Russia".

This denomination includes also President of Syria Bashar Asad, former leader of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity, head of "the occupational administration" of the Crimea Sergei Aksenov, Chairman of the Russian State Duma Standing Committee on Defense Vladimir Shamanov, and the head of the "pro-Russia terrorist group LNR [the Lugansk People's Republic]" Leonid Pasechnik.

The FSR is inviting civil society activists to help specify and replenish the Putin List and to form regional and local Lists of persons "bearing responsibility for systematic violation of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the Criminal Code, Russian laws, the international law, and to accumulation of evidence on crimes committed by the said persons".

Infotag's dossier: The first Forum of Free Russia was held in Vilnius (Lithuania) in March 2016. It was organized by Russian opposition politicians Garry Kasparov and Ivan Tiurin. Since then, the opposition have organized already five such fora that traditionally bring together Russian civil society activists, opposition politicians, journalists, publicists, international experts, figures of culture etc.
