SLOVAKIAN OSCE PRESIDENCY READY TO HOLD 5+2 FORMAT MEETINGS PROVIDED A CLEAR AGENDA IS AVAILABLE

21 january, 2019

The Slovakian OSCE Presidency stands ready to organize as many 5+2 format meetings as necessary, but on condition that a sound and clear agenda is available, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Slovakia's Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Miroslav Lajcak stated following his meeting with the president of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic [PMR], Vadim Krasnoselsky, in Tiraspol on Friday.

According to the Tiraspol leader's official website, Miroslav Lajcak said he hopes for his country's efficient OSCE Presidency, but solutions and decisions are all the same to be achieved by nobody but the Moldovan and Transnistrian sides.

"We are determined and ready to help. I hope that the job will be continued and that we will see concrete results. We stand ready to convoke the next 5+2 format meeting when we see a perspective to achieve something concrete. We would like to convene - preferably before summer comes, but everything will depend on the sides' preparedness. We should not assemble if it is clear there is nothing to deal on. This would be a bad sign. But I think all the negotiation stakeholders are realizing we have a good moment, a good atmosphere, and we feel more trust than two years ago, and all this should be preserved", said the diplomat.

He would wish the current year to become a year of good and concrete practical results.

"We had a very concrete conversation here today. Before it, I heard the position of and interpretations by the Moldovan side. So, all this put together is giving us a picture of problems pending, and ideas of how they should be solved", said Miroslav Lajcak.

Commenting on preserving Franco Frattini as the OSCE Special Representative on Transnistria for one more term of office, Miroslav Lajcak characterized him as an experienced politician and negotiator, with a powerful Italian backing, who has demonstrated convincingly the efficiency of his activities on this post last year.

Vadim Krasnoselsky also expressed confidence that the current Slovakian OSCE Presidency will give a new impact to realization of signed agreements and to achieving new accords, which should let 2019 become a fruitful year.

"We should be concerned about implementation of achieved decisions into life so that our citizens could use them as a norm. I mean the questions of logistics, economy, humanitarian issues etc. - things that make people's life a life. Transnistria is constructive, and is becoming a zone of stability, demonstrating its ability to achieve accords even in very complicated conditions - certainly with the help of our colleagues, including the OSCE Mission to Moldova", said the Tiraspol leader.

Answering the questions asked by journalists from Slovakia about prospects for a complete settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and for reunification with Moldova, Vadim Krasnoselsky replied that each side has its own vision of confrontation cessation.

"For Moldova this is country integration, while for Transnistria this is international recognition of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic as an independent state. Such is our stance, and we keep implementing the will of our people expressed at a referendum. We view the conflict resolution through recognition of the Transnistrian statehood", stressed the president. Concerning a perspective of removing Russian peacekeepers from the Transnistria Security Zone, Vadim Krasnoselsky stated: "As long as the Transnistrian dispute remains unresolved, Transnistria shall not hold whatever talks on this issue".
