TIRASPOL LEADER CALLS ON GAZPROM TO MAKE DECISIONS TAKING INTO ACCOUNT TRANSNISTRIA’S INTERESTS

31 january, 2019

Any decisions related to the provision of the Transnistria market with natural gas and the organization of its transit in the context of updating a number of legislative norms should be made taking into account Transnistria citizens’ interest – holders of the region’s sovereignty, reported Transnistria President Vadim Krasnoselsy at the meeting with the Russian Gazprom delegation headed by Deputy Chairman Valery Golubev.

The Transnistrian leader emphasized the importance of uninterrupted functionality of the gas transportation system, and stressed that the energy independence is an important component of statehood, self-sufficiency and country’s independence.

According to the press release, Golubev has fully shared this opinion and stated that the Gazprom needs to carry out a serious work to fulfill the tasks within the legal framework.

“Timely measures also require the completion of contractual obligations. Risks for the Transnistria should be not just minimized but completely eliminated at any changes”, he said.

It has already been reported by Infotag, Moldovagaz and its gas distribution and supply structures are in a process of reorganization in accordance with the institutional reform provided by the RM-EU Association Agreement and the third energy package, as well as the Moldovan legislation, which provides for the separation of gas transmission, distribution and supply. Formally, Transnistria is part of the Moldovagaz Company and receives the Russian gas supplied to Moldova. However, since 2009, the region does not pay for the supplied gas, and now the accumulated debt exceeds US$6 billion.
