RUSSIAN LAWYER CALLS ON UN TO STRENGTHEN CONTACTS WITH TRANSNISTRIA

12 july, 2019

Leonid Manakov, the Head of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic’s Official Representation in Moscow, called on the UN to a wider extension of contacts with Transnistria.

According to the PMR foreign office’s website, he said this while presenting his report “Human rights as a basis for the development of cooperation between Transnistria and the United Nations” during the 41st session of the UN Council for Human Rights in Geneva.

“The Transnistrian Moldovan republic is a modern European country, which firmly adheres to principles of an open and honest cooperation with the UN. Seeking the creation of a truly law-governed state, Transnistria recognizes as legal norm and is fulfilling all the basic international agreements, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international covenants on civil and political, economic, social and cultural rights”, stressed Manakov, who is visiting Geneva in the delegation of the International Council for Russian Compatriots.

According to him, the Moldovan leadership restricts Transnistrians’ rights to free movement, personal security and integrity, labor and entrepreneurial initiative, education and choice of profession, foreign economic activity and communication with the outside world.

He proposed to the international community to grant to Transnistria a special status of observer in the UN, to form in the UN a group for interaction with PMR and to create a UN resource center in the region.

“On behalf of Transnistria I state that our country is open for the closest cooperation with all the UN structures. I am sure that our good will and genuine desire to be a part of world community will be heard”, Manakov concluded.
