TRANSNISTRIAN PARLIAMENT STRENGTH TO BE REDUCED BY 10 MPs

18 july, 2019

The number of deputies in the Transnistrian supreme soviet will be reduced by 10 people – to 33 from the current 43 MPs. A corresponding decision was taken by the PMR parliament at the last sitting of the Spring-Summer session on Wednesday.

According to the Transnistrian parliament press service, the initiative belongs to MPs who want to reduce expenditures in such a way. According to the amendments to the Constitution, in the next Parliament there will be 10 deputies less.

Parliament deputy speaker, chairwoman of the profile standing committee Galina Antiufeyeva said that the law will enter into force a month after its adoption and will be applied to the next supreme soviet.

The initiative also implies optimization of raion councils of people’s deputies.

In total, there are 1155 deputies of all levels in Transnistria. The size of deputy corps, which will be elected on November 29, 2020, will fall by 260 people.

The initiative implies the introduction of changes into the election code in the field of improving the scheme of election districts. According to the region’s election commission, the boundaries of the supreme soviet MPs’ districts will be extended 20%. Now, a deputy of raion council represents interests of 300-400 voters, while after the changes this figure will grow to 1 thousand people on average. Due to these decisions, the budget will save up to 2 million rubles (US$124 thousand).

The combined voting day on electing deputies to the supreme soviet, local and raion councils will take place in Transnistria on November 29, 2020.
