ECHR RULES THAT RUSSIA PAY COMPENSATION TO TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS OF ROMANIAN SCHOOLS IN TRANSNISTRIA

19 september, 2019

The European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) ordered Russia to pay 126 thousand euros moral damage to teachers of four Romanian schools in the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (PMR), as well as to the schools’ students and their parents, reported Promo-LEX Association, which appeared for the victims in Strasburg.

“The ECHR issued 8 rulings, including 17 cases of human rights violations in the Transnistrian region. The first ruling relates to Ion Iovcev and 13 others against the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. The plaintiffs are teachers, school personnel, students and parents from four Romanian schools in the Transnistrian region: Tiraspol theoretical lyceum, Lucian Blaga theoretical lyceum, Mihai Eminescu lyceum in Dubasari, Stefan cel Mare theoretical lyceum in Grigoriopol, and a secondary school of the village of Corjova, Dubasari raion”, stated in the Promo-LEX message.

The ECHR decided to pay the victims compensation for moral damage, as well as five thousand euros to cover court costs. As in previous similar cases, the ECHR passed a verdict against Russia, as the Court does not recognize Transnistria, and Russia supports the separatist regime of the region.

In February 2014, Ion Iovcev, Director of Luciana Blaga theoretical lyceum in Tiraspol, an accountant and a driver of the educational institution were detained by Transnistrian police when they were carrying cash from Chisinau to pay salaries to teachers of the schools where Romanian is a language of instruction. They were accused of smuggling money.
