05 august, 2020

MP Mihai Popsoi, of the pro-European opposition Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), has expressed concern about consequences of a possible exposition at theRussian arms depots in Moldova's breakaway Transnistrian region. He made the comments after a deadly blast at a warehouse in Beirut, that killed dozens of people on 4 August.

The explosion in Beirut “represents an insignificant part of the power of the explosive material (22 thousand tons), stored for more than 40 years in Kolbasna”, Popsoi wrote on Facebook.

“These warehouses of the Russian Federation pose a danger to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. That is why old ammunition must be urgently evacuated or destroyedwith special equipment,”the parliamentarian said.

According by Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diyab, the explosion was caused by improper storage of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate. The cargo was transported to Beirutfor six years with a vessel owned by a Russian national that was sailing under the Moldova flag at that time.
