LDPM RAISES OVER 5 THOUSAND SIGNATURES IN FAVOR OF CONVENTION CONCLUSION
Chisinau. Last Sunday, the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) held public meetings in 13 raions situated along the border with Romania, at which 5,702 signatures were raised in favor of Moldova’s concluding a bilateral Convention on trans-border traffic.
The meeting participants claimed that Romania’s accession to the European Union and the visa regime introduction created a serious obstacle for the Moldovan border raion residents in their habitual visiting of relatives living across the river, or in running businesses in Romania.
LDPM leader MP Vladimir Filat told a news conference in Infotag today the signatures will be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, after which the signature raising will be continued. And on May 25 the party will organize a large citizen meeting in Chisinau that will be attended by the representatives of many Moldovan provincial localities.
“The Convention signature is in the interests of the broad Moldovan public. Nearly a million people living in 15 Moldovan raions along the border with Romania will be thus able to go to the neighbor country freely without entry visas”, said Vladimir Filat.
He said his party does not believe in the success of the talks the Moldovan and Romanian foreign ministries will hold in Bucharest on May 14 and 15.
Filat explained Moldovan diplomats are going to Bucharest to negotiate Basic Political Treaty and Border Delimitation Agreement with Romania, but “we believe the signing of the Convention on trans-border traffic should not be combined with, or conditioned by, the conclusion of the two fundamental documents”.
