LDPM HAS RAISED OVER 180 THOUSAND SIGNATURES FOR AMENDING CONSTITUTION
Chisinau. The oppositional Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) has already raised over 180 thousand signatures in support of amending the Constitution, party leader MP Vladimir Filat told a news conference in Infotag today.
He said that by this June 23, the party is supposed to have the law-envisaged minimum of signatures – 200 thousand – from citizens supporting the idea that the entire nation has the right to elect its president, not only 101 parliamentarians, and that the republic should use a mixed system of electing its parliament, when a half of deputies are elected by party tickets and the other half – from single-mandate constituencies.
“We shall easily manage to collect the required number of signatures, and will submit them to the Central Election Commission in time i.e. by June 23. By law, the CEC shall have 15 days at its disposal to check the signature authenticity. Then the Constitutional Court is supposed to make a conclusion on the proposed amendment of the Main Law. And then the signatures will be sent to parliament”, Filat said.
He described several instances of intimidation of LDPM signature collectors, and said the party will reflect the incidents in its documentary report on power abusing by the ruling Communist Party.
Vladimir Filat also said the Liberal Democrats are continuing their campaign in favor of signing the Convention on trans-border traffic with Romania. Thus, on June 15, residents’ assemblies will be held simultaneously in 30 towns and villages situated in the borderland zone to discuss the need for signing such Convention with the neighbor country without delay.
“We shall continue organizing such meetings as long as necessary – until the Convention conclusion. This is a document extremely important for the grassroots, and the authorities have no ground for procrastinating its signature”, stated Vladimir Filat.
