COMMUNIST AUTHORITIES INTIMIDATING POPULAR ACTION MEMBERS
Chisinau. The Popular Action socio-political movement leaders are maintaining that the Communist authorities are doing all in their power to intimidate the citizens who have joined the movement.
Sergiu Mocanu, Popular Action Chairman and former Adviser-at-Large to President Vladimir Voronin, stated at a news conference in Infotag today that the Ungheni raion police commissariat had lately resorted to unprecedented actions against certain residents of the Cornesti village.
“About 40 cops raided the houses of Popular Action members, asking them questions like how and why they had joined the movement and what they had received as a reward for that. The unwelcome guests did not care to explain to anybody of over 200 people what the reason of such interviews was”, said Sergiu Mocanu.
He wondered why Cornesti had been chosen as a target of such dubious interrogations, bearing in mind that Popular Action subdivisions work in all Moldovan raions.
“I presume this interview campaign has a relation to the citizens’ signatures we sent to the Ministry of Justice in early 2008. The Ministry refused to register the Movement – on grounds that 1.6 thousand signatures, raised in our favor, were allegedly forged. Subsequently, the MoJ even demanded from the General Prosecutor's Office to initiate a criminal litigation to this regard. I guess this is precisely why the police are interrogating our activists in the localities”, said Sergiu Mocanu.
Presently, the case against Popular Action initiated by the MoJ is being examined by the Supreme Court of Justice, after the Chisinau Appeals Chamber had passed a judgment against the oppositional organization.
Activist Daniela Bodrug said the Popular Action is preparing a petition to international organizations working in Moldova and to human right organizations.
“What happened in Cornesti was but a premeditated act grossly breaching the citizens’ right of free choice. Moldovan citizens are thus being intimidated in order to kill in them the very thought of joining whatever oppositional political formation”, said Daniela Bodrug.
