MOLDOVAN LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY ASKS EU, USA TO EXERT PRESSURE ON COMMUNIST AUTHORITIES
Chisinau. The Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) today sent an appeal to the European bodies and the USA, asking them to exert pressure on the Communist authorities so that they observe the democratic rules and to prevent fraud at the 2009 parliamentary election.
PLDM first deputy chairman Alexandru Tanase told a news conference on July 22 that the authorities have already started tricks by vilifying the opposition, hampering its access to media outlets and introducing electoral obstacles in the legislation.
Tanase read out the appeal in which the PLDM proposes to the European Union and the USA to make the subsequent financial assistance for Moldova conditional upon the return to the former electoral threshold of 4% (it was increased to 6%). Another condition should be the lift of the prohibition to hold public positions imposed on people with dual citizenship; the cancellation of the ban on electoral blocs in Moldova; and guarantees of the access of the Moldovan opposition to media outlets.
The Liberal Democrats propose to international bodies to monitor the actions undertaken to harass the opposition and the way the humanitarian aid is distributed. They assume that the authorities use the humanitarian aid for electoral purposes.
Tanase said that the EU should condition the signing of a new agreement with Moldova on the implementation of democratic reforms.
The PLDM proposed that the Council of Europe should continue monitoring Moldova until it fully meets all its commitments: eradication of corruption, freedom of media, strong local self-administration and freedom of expression.
“Large-scale frauds related to the election are being conducted at present and it does not matter whether infringements are registered on the election day. The current infringements play a decisive role,” Tanase said.
PLDM deputy chairman Iulian Fruntasu informed about his meetings with MEPs. He said he passed them a draft resolution on the state of democracy in Moldova and voiced hope that the document will be adopted soon.
