RAVNOPRAVYE MOVEMENT SAYS MOLDOVA SHOULD QUIT GUAM IN WAKE OF GEORGIAN EVENTS
Chisinau. Moldova should immediately quit GUAM (a loose alliance of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) following the ongoing military confrontation in Georgian rebel region South Ossetia, the leader of the Ravnopravye public political movement, Valeriu Klimenko, has said.
Speaking at a news conference today, Klimenko said that Moldova cannot be part of an organization in which human rights are violated and civilians are killed.
Klimenko also said that the goal pursued by Georgian servicemen in South Ossetia was to destroy everything alive. This is the way of territorial reintegration chosen by Georgia's top leadership, Klimenko said, pointing to Russia's adherence to its peacekeeping commitments.
According to the Ravnopravye leader, Russian soldiers halted the genocide of South Ossetian people at the price of their own lives.
Klimenko supported the call for setting up an international tribunal that would investigate the crimes committed by Georgian servicemen in South Ossetia and would punish those guilty.
Klimenko said he hopes that the US president, who “has given his blessing for the Georgian leader to commit mass killings”, will join the Georgian president in the dock.
Commenting on the actions undertaken by Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev, Klimenko said “they were absolutely adequate in the present situation”.
“They helped save the small population of South Ossetia from destruction and defend the honour and dignity of Russian citizens, who make up about 90 per cent of the population in this unrecognized republic”, Klimenko said.
