The Democratic Party (DP) and the Social Democratic Party of Moldova (SDPM) keep on accusing each other of upsetting the negotiations on their joint running for parliament in 2009. ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT PRESS LAUNCHES PROJECT ON MONITORING OF PUBLIC FUNDS SPENDING

Chisinau. The administrations of the Soroca, the Cimislia, the Rezina and the Ungheni raions will be subject to the one-year monitoring of the public funds using. It is envisaged by the “Demand the Report on Public Funds Spending” project, launched by the Association of the Independent Press (AIP) with financial support on the part of the Soros-Moldova Foundation.

AIP Executive Director Petru Macovei said at a news conference on Tuesday that the project objective is to follow up the using of the taxpayers’ money.

“With the help of this project we try to make the local authorities to be more responsible in the use of the public funds in order to make the planning and spending of public financial resources more efficient and transparent”, he remarked.

In Macovei’s words, the project will be implemented with the help of raion newspapers: Unghiul,  Observatorul, Cuvintul and Businessinfo. Monitoring teams will be formed in the raion centers from representatives of local authorities, mass media and non-governmental organizations. The newspapers will open special columns to publish articles on the use of public funds.

Macovei remarked, if the project is successful, it will be launched in other raions. 

Cimislia Mayor Gheorghe Railean said at a news conference that he agreed upon participating in the project in order to raise responsibility on the part of the public administration.

“Certainly, there a risk, as the management of such city is a complicated matter and unpredicted expenditures and problems can emerge. And the opponents may use this fact. But we want to demonstrate to the residents of our raions that we act in their interests”, Gheorghe Railean added.
