YOUNG BESSARABIANS CRITICIZE EUGEN TOMAC
Chisinau. The National Union of Young Bessarabians (NUYB) has strongly criticized Eugene Tomac, the Romanian Liberal Democratic Party’s candidate for the Romanian Parliament.
NUYB Chairman Corneliu Radauta told a news conference in Infotag today that Eugen Tomac – a young man in his late twenties, born and raised in Moldova, who received a higher education in Romania and currently lives there – is being backed in his electioneering here by the Organization of Bessarabian Students which has not been officially registered in Romania and represents the remnants of what once used to be a youth organization of the Moldovan Christian Democratic Popular Party in Bucharest.
“We are concerned about how Mr. Tomac is presenting himself to the local public – that he is Romanian President Traian Basescu’s Adviser on the problems of Romanians worldwide. However, President Basescu’s personal website clearly says that this post is being held by Anca Ileana Ilinou”, said the Union leader.
In his opinion, the Tomac’s recent statement – that he will resolve the problem of Romanian citizenship for all Moldovans in a matter of 6 months – is but a challenge against all the Governments of Romania since the early 1990s, and “a very brave statement that can come only from a very young person inexperienced in the life reality”.
The NUYB members are going to vote, on November 30, for the Romanian Social Democratic Party candidate Tudor Pantiru, though they respect also the Romanian National Liberal Party candidate, Nicolae Dabija.
“We are recommending to voters a well-known candidate with an excellent reputation – Tudor Pantiru. He will be worthily representing us in the Romanian Parliament. He was Chairman of the Standing Committee for Legal Issues, Appointments and Immunity in the first Moldovan Parliament, was independent Moldova’s first Ambassador to the United Nations, and the first-ever international judge of the Romanian nationality”, said NUYB Secretary General Andrei Savciuc.
Upcoming December 1, the Union will mark its first anniversary. Registered with Bucharest, the NUYB unites some 500 members and represents the interests of Bessarabian students and alumni.
