ASSOCIATION STANDS IN SUPPORT OF STRAY DOGS

Chisinau.   The Alga Association for stray animals protection has resolutely condemned the Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca’s decision to embark on annihilating stray dogs in the capital city. Alga is proposing another way out of the really serious dog problem – to create asylums for such animals.

Association Chairperson Valentina Dudnic appeared at a news conference in Infotag today, and called the Mayor’s statement as “immoral…  The construction of one or several asylums for ownerless dogs and cats is the best way to solve the problem. As Chisinau has no means for this, our city fathers should address profiled European institutions for help to build such asylums and remunerate the work of their personnel”.

Ex-parliamentarian Vitalia Pavlicenco, leader of the National Liberal Party, also regards Chirtoaca’s intention to organize a mercy killing of such animals as inhuman and barbaric, for she believes such hunting for dogs will only generate cruelty among citizens, particularly children.

As a matter of fact, there exists an asylum here – at the Bacioi suburban community, and its director Sergiu Tocan said at the news conference that, according to his estimates, there are “only” 6 thousand stray dogs in Chisinau, not 30 thousand as the Chisinau municipal authorities are maintaining.

Tocan stated he is ready to accept and neuter all homeless dogs in Chisinau, if certainly the Municipality renders financial assistance to enlarge the existing facility and pay salaries to the staff.

This week, Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca announced his intention to at last resolve the stray-dog problem due to the growing number of complaints from citizens attacked by such dogs lately.
