SERGIU MOCANU SAYS HE IS STILL SUSPECTED OF ATTEMPTING A COUP AND HIS CASE IS STILL TREATED BY SAME PROSECUTOR
Sergiu Mocanu, the leader of the Popular Action Movement and former Adviser-at-Large to President Vladimir Voronin, has expressed indignation that the Prosecutor General's Office has not yet closed down the case against him, though yet in November 2009 the Ministry of Justice officially stated to international organizations that Mocanu’s arrest had been illegitimate.
Today, Mocanu organized a news conference in Infotag and said, in particular, that on Monday he was received by Moldovan Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco, who shocked his visitor by announcing that the Mocanu case had not been closed down yet, and that Sergiu Mocanu is continuing to stand charges of organizing the April 7 events.
“After the official statement made by the new Government last autumn – that there were no more suspects of organizing the post-election events, I had thought all those subsequent months that the problem was over. But yesterday, I learnt that the investigation is going on. Moreover, I was shocked to hear that my case is being conducted by the same prosecutor – Oleg Malai. Well, I guess the preservation of such former hangmen at their posts is a fundamental blunder of our judiciary”, said Sergiu Mocanu.
His lawyer Ion Dron believes the Mocanu case is devoid of whatever perspective because there exists no ground for accusing him of anything.
Infotag’s dossier: Sergiu Mocanu was detained by the police in downtown Chisinau last April 8 on suspicion of involvement in the organization of massive riots and of a coup attempt. Mocanu was kept behind bars for several months – until the coming of the new Government into power.
