GHIMPU DECREE IS AIMED AT ABOLISHING MOLDOVA’S STATEHOOD – HISTORIAN

GHIMPU DECREE IS AIMED AT ABOLISHING MOLDOVA’S STATEHOOD – HISTORIAN

The chief objective of the Ghimpu decree on declaring June 28 [1940] as a Day of Soviet occupation is to prove to the world that the statehood of the Republic of Moldova is illegal, so it needs to be abolished, maintains Dr. Sergiu Nazaria, Chairman of the ProMoldova Association of Historians and Political Scientists.

He stressed at a news conference in Infotag today that the day of June 28, 1940 has long ago become one of the main symbols of the Moldovan statehood “irrespective of anybody’s likes or dislikes”.

“If there exists no such date, this means we do not exist as a state. By means of his decree, Mihai Ghimpu seeks to get us all back into the year 1940, i.e. into the period when Bessarabia [the larger portion of the modern Republic of Moldova lying between the Prut and Dniester Rivers] used to be an integral part of Romania’s [in 1918-1940]. By this decree, Ghimpu is trying to carry out in practice the dismantling of our state – the Republic of Moldova. Such is precisely the historic mission of Mihai Ghimpu’s”, said Sergiu Nazaria.

Touching on the special commission of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, which recently shared Ghimpu’s opinion about the Day of Soviet occupation, Dr. Nazaria stated that the commission was formed “in a tremendous secrecy”, it is not a representative body, and therefore it is unlawful.

“This commission has been formed of people who stand on the Ghimpu’s position that the Republic of Moldova must necessarily be unified with Romania. These are the representatives of the so-called Romanian unionism school. To my mind, a commission of such kind should have united the representatives of all academic history schools. But the most amazing thing is that none of the commission members is a specialist in the 1940 problem”, said Sergiu Nazaria.

In his words, he has scrutinized the entire available archive funds of the Republic of Moldova but has not found even a single document proving the fact of Soviet occupation. Moreover, judging by documents of the inter-war period of 1918-1940, a greater part of the local population regarded 1918 as the year of occupation of Bessarabia by Romania. In particular, this can be found in the memoirs of many outstanding personalities of that period.

Nazaria does not share the widespread opinion that Mihai Ghimpu allegedly acts not realizing that he is undermining the Moldo-Russian relations, too.

“Oh no, Mr. Ghimpu realizes everything perfectly, and he issues such decrees wittingly for the only sake of putting an end to Moldova’s statehood”, said the historian.
