LABOR PARTY SUPPORTS PARLIAMENT’S DECISION TO AMEND ARTICLE 78 IN CONSTITUTION THROUGH REFERENDUM
Moldova’s Labor Party has stood up in support of the Parliament’s decision to amend Article 78 in the Constitution (election of the head of state) through a nation-wide referendum.
Party leader Gheorghe Sima said at a news conference in Infotag today that the organization’s Political Council has an opinion that such a method of amending the Main Law will be perceived by the Moldovan society as an important step to consolidation of the state – the Republic of Moldova.
“The current method of electing president by parliament has excluded voters from a democratic election process and, essentially, has downgraded the forum’s responsibility for the welfare and security of citizenry. Presidential election has developed into a conflict that undermined the civilized dialog of parliamentary parties”, said Gheorghe Sima, who is convinced that the referendum and an early parliamentary election should put an end to this conflict.
He said the Labor Party has already started preparation for the early parliamentary election expected in the upcoming autumn.
Infotag’s dossier: At the April 5, 2009 parliamentary elections, the Labor Party [which had the name of Patria-Rodina Labor Union then] quitted the electoral marathon yet in the run-up to the elections, and did not participate in the July 29 elections.
