PRP TO TAKE PART IN SEPTEMBER 5 REFERENDUM
The People’s Republican Party will take an active part in the September 5 referendum. In the run-up to the poll, PRP activists will be explaining citizens the need for amending Article 78 in the Constitution. The party stands for a direct all-nation election of the head of state.
On Tuesday, People’s Republican Party Chairman Nicolae Andronic said at a news conference in Infotag that although he stands for having the referendum, he reckons the problem cannot be resolved by merely amending Article 78.
He said, “The amending of this Article should be accompanied with amending of Article 98 as well, which envisages in its present shape that the President nominates a prime ministerial candidate. We presume Article 98 should be amended as follows: the president must accept the prime ministerial candidacy proposed by parliamentary majority”.
Andronic presumes that with the current legislation, the president may become a factor of destabilization of the political situation in the country.
“For example, the president may propose for the prime ministerial position a person having no relation to parliamentary elections and, accordingly, such person may receive no backing by parliamentary majority”, said the PRP leader. He presumes that the existing formula of amending the Constitution proves the governing Alliance for European Integration’s inability to reach a consensus.
Nicolae Andronic said that all PRP structures will actively participate in the referendum campaign, which will become kind of a preparation for the early parliamentary elections scheduled for the autumn of 2010.
He also named as erroneous the information, which appeared in the Moldovan mass media recently, saying that the Gagauzia Popular Assembly is allegedly calling on voters to abstain from the referendum.
“This distributed Appeal has no legal force because it was not approved by a majority of Popular Assembly deputies, and in the absence of Gagauzia Bashkan [governor] Mikhail Formuzal. Moreover, the Bashkan, who is the Chairman of the Popular Assembly’s Political Council, is maintaining Gagauzia shall go for the referendum”, said Nicolae Andronic.
