LAWYERS UNDERSTAND EDUARD POPA’S ACTIONS

The social association “Lawyers for Human Rights” considers that Eduard Popa’s threatening of exploding himself in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office – it is an example of desperate reaction to authorities’ dereliction, which in 5 years did nothing to re-establish justice.

Lawyer representing Popa at the European Court of Human Rights Vladislav Gribincea said that in November of 2005 Popa has undergone a cruel treatment by Ialoveni police officers, after that he was lying for two days unconscious at a lakeside. He got deeply frostbitten, so medics amputated his legs, so now he is an invalid.

According to Gribincea, Popa’s parents wrote complaints to public prosecutor’s office of Ialoveni, and to Prosecutor General’s Office, but for 5 years no criminal proceedings were initiated. In 2007 Popa went to the European Court. In September of 2009 his appeal was sent to Moldovan Government, and after that Ialoveni Raion Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a criminal case on cruel treatment. But even after that prosecutors have not interrogated the injured, and no police officers were offered for identification.

On Sunday, a police officer came to Popa’s house and threatened him with violence for complaining.

On Monday, Eduard Popa menaced Prosecutor General’s Office with an imitation of bombe, and demanded that Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco to talk to him. A criminal suit was started on explosion menacing; Popa can be punished with 2 years prison or pay a penalty in 10 thousand lei.
