MCP ENJOYS POPULATION’S HIGHEST CONFIDENCE

The Moldovan Communist Party enjoys the population’s highest confidence – 42% against 43% in January 2010. Data was provided by the Moldovan Association of Sociologists and Demographers, which conducted the public opinion poll Vox Populi in August with topic Socio-Economical and Political Aspects of Moldovan Society on the Eve of the September 5 Constitutional Referendum.

Head of the association Victor Mocanu said on Thursday the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) follows the MCP in the confidence summit (41%, 37% in January); the Democratic Party has 38% against 34%, the Liberal Party has 34% against 31%, and the Alliance Moldova Noastra [Out Moldova] has 23% - same amount in January.

Among political leaders, most popular are Vladimir Voronin (30.6%) and Vladimir Filat (27%). They are followed by Marian Lupu (21.1%), Mihai Ghimpu (5.3%), Serafim Urecheanu (4.7%), Dorin Chirtoaca (4.3%) and Valeriu Pasat (1.4%).

According to the opinion poll, about 63% of respondents are going to participate in the September 5 referendum concerning Constitution’s amending, 22% - will not go to vote, and 15% - have not decided yet.

Also, the opinion poll shows that about three fourth of respondents support the idea of direct presidential elections. If the elections would be conducted next Sunday, Voronin would have 22% of votes, Lupu – 19%, Filat – 16%, Ghimpu – 4%, Urecheanu and Chirtoaca – 3% for each.

The public opinion poll has being conducted between August 9 and 22 among 1594 respondents from 76 localities. Its relative error is about 2.2%.
